Nilsen: Passion For Basketball Alive In Naples 11 August 2009

When I headed for Naples I never anticipated experiencing the kind of emotion I felt standing courtside last Friday.

The sensation of a slight lump in the throat and feeling more than a little choked after being completely immersed in the raw passion and almost unbearable tension of two extraordinary basketball games.

In a fitting finale to a superb tournament, reigning champions Spain edged out Belgium 57-53 to secure back to back gold medals as Naples was treated to another incredible overtime thriller.

Andrea Vilaro showed why she made the All Tournament Team with another stellar display as she claimed a superb double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Belgium star Emma Meesseman was crowned MVP after lighting it up in Naples with a string of double-doubles on her way to helping her team reach the Final of the tournament.

The center impressed the voting coaches not just with her stunning numbers and sparkling displays, but also her level headed approach and hard work in the paint for her team at both ends of the floor.

France won the bronze medal game in Naples after a stellar first 20 minutes helped them claim a superb 75-46 victory over Russia.

It was very much a case of de ja vous for Russia Coach Anna Arkhipova Von Kalmanovich who has impressed as a coach during the tournament but was left to watch on helplessly as her team repeated the terrible start that proved so costly in yesterdays semi-final with Spain.

Quarter final losers Greece and Czech Republic fought it out for seventh spot and it was Greece who emerged the victorious with a hard fought 59-54 win.

Greece had been in control of the game during the first half and found themselves 28-23 in front at the break.

Turkey will head to the U17 World Championships next year after blowing out hosts Italy 71-50 as they gained compensation for their heart breaking and gut wrenching quadruple overtime loss against France in the quarter finals.

Coach Firat Okul was buoyant after claiming fifth spot and apologised as he broke away from the middle of his post game interview to join in with his players as they celebrated courtside.

The Czech Republic have proven to be one of the surprise teams in Napoli having shrugged off successive losses on days one and two of the tournament to turn things around and secure an unlikely quarter-final spot.

While their fairytale run towards next years World U17 Championships and even a medal has now ended, FIBA Europe caught up with star guard Tereza Vyoralova for 24 seconds.

Reigning champions Spain will get the opportunity to defend their title after booking their place in tomorrows final against Belgium with a truly brutal 66-46 massacre of Russia.

The victory was achieved via an astonishing whirlwind first half. It left the Russian team suffering terminal storm damage and completely blown out of sight - their dreams of gold gone after a disastrous twenty minutes.

A typically sparkling display from center Emma Meesseman was the highlight of another stunning Belgium performance as they booked their place in the Final with a 73-58 demolition of France.

Meesseman was scintillating with 18 points, 15 rebounds and 5 blocks to cement her place as one of the leading contenders for tournament MVP.

Turkey will fight it out with Italy tomorrow for a place at next years U17 World Championships after winning their respective semi-finals for the 5 to 8 spots against Greece and Czech Republic.

In the first game of the day, Turkey stepped onto court looking to pick themselves off the floor after their gut wrenching quadruple overtime loss against France the night before.

Despite the agony of losing their Division A status after a winless streak in Naples, Germany duo Sophie Eder and Lena Bradaric both found time to speak to FIBA Europe as they paired up for 24 Seconds.

While it has not been easy going for Spain, they have at least been able to rely on the genuine inside-outside threat of Andrea Vilaro.

Taking time out from the race for MVP and trying to book a place in the semi-finals, the wing player kindly caught up with FIBA Europe.
